Water, Ice, And Stone: Science and Memory on the Antarctic Lakes
Water, Ice, And Stone: Science and Memory on the Antarctic Lakes - Bill Green The overwhelming image I'm left with after reading this book is that of the sea breathing. Much of the science here is the taking in and giving out of various elements and molecules by water, be it in Antarctic lakes, the ocean, or rivers and the global water bodies in general. Green traces the chemistry of water and where it comes from and where it disappears to. He also paints the picture of the Antarctic he studies, its vastness and stillness and sterility.

The story is mostly science and poetry. I feel like the emphasis was more on the poetry. Green got to write up his science in scientific papers. This book was his opportunity to let loose, to try to convey the magic he sees in his research and in his work. There are bits of memoir, but they mostly show up in the vivid dreams he recorded while he was "on the continent". I felt like they were part of the poetry.

The science that's there is clear and accurate, while spiced with more poetry. But that's what makes this a beautiful, inspiring book. He lets us in on the questions, the mysteries in his field. The world's rivers dump copper and calcium in the ocean, but the ocean doesn't have much copper or calcium in it. So where does it go? How the the ocean cleanse itself?

The research summer in Antarctic is pre-internet, pre-phone service down south, so the whole thing has a ring of the ancient to it that would be entirely missing from a similar tale today. And the forward from 2008 to the edition I read that Green added to actually mention global warming lends more context to it, but the work exists in and of itself outside of time, the way Antarctica is described.

Swordships of Scorpio (The Saga of Prescot of Antares, 4) - Alan Burt Akers Why does this book remind me of Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter of Mars series? An Earthman somehow finds himself on an alien planet with many and varied intelligent species contending with one another, some humanoid and some not so humanoid, with the most advanced weaponry being the sword. The hero from Earth becomes romantically involved with an alien female who could be called a princess and he finds himself resisting the charms of many other alien temptressess. The writing style is very pulpish with the hero going from one adventure to another saving himself every time with his skilled swordplay. He finds himself aboard a pirate ship forming an alliance with a gorgeous female pirate and his time on that pirate ship reminds me of a Hollywood pirate movie from the 1950s. Hmm, maybe all this is why I am reminded of John Carter of Mars.

Fighting the Greater Jihad: Amadu Bamba and the Founding of the Muridiyya of Senegal, 1853-1913 (New African Histories)
Fighting the Greater Jihad: Amadu Bamba and the Founding of the Muridiyya of Senegal, 1853-1913 - Cheikh Anta Babou This book was interesting - I don't know much about the Muridiyya and this is certainly a detailed account of their growth at the turn of the 20th century. The author argues against the dominant portrayal of the rise of Muridiyya - namely that it was almost exclusively a reaction to French colonialism and that the Murids were 'collaborators' in helping the French consolidate power in West Africa - and argues instead that it was much more in line with African-initiated shifts in Islam dating from much earlier in the 19th century that was shaped as much by the Murids as the French. In this way, he joins the recent trend in African history to diminish the centrality of the colonial powers while acknowledging their military and political prowess, describing the colonial encounter as a 'negotiation' or 'accomodation.' Seeing as Babou is himself connected to the Murids (maybe part of?), some parts were written with a rather uncritical eye, which makes the book both more personal and more frustrating to read. His argument often gets lost in the sheer detail he establishes about the life of Amadu Bamba (lots lots lots of names oh man) and if it wasn't for his concise introduction and conclusions, it would be a tricky read indeed.
