Old School - Tobias Wolff
Old School - Tobias Wolff

Ever since I read This Boy's Life I was dying to know what had happened to Jack/Toby, more than just the wrap up we got at the end of the book, and I also wanted to read more of Tobias Wolff. And although Old School is described as a novel, not a memoir, I can still hear the same voice of Jack/Toby as this narrator, whose name is never mentioned. And that's exactly what I wanted!

I really enjoy anything Wolff writes, and I think I enjoy most the way his characters are far from perfect. This makes them real to me, and also they make me question my own choices and decisions. In the reflective voice, the narrator does not try to sugar coat or defend himself - it was what it was. He tells the story the way it happened, to him, at the time but also with the older voice of hindsight. It's fantastic writing. Will have to find more by Wolff.
