REQUIEM FOR THE AMERICAN DREAM by Noam Chomsky
Requiem for the American Dream: The 10 P... Requiem for the American Dream: The 10 Principles of Concentration of Wealth & Power - Noam Chomsky,Peter Hutchison,Kelly Nyks,Jared P. Scott
Very timely. Very interesting. It's the companion book to the documentary by the same name. I liked that he went back 50 years to put what is happening today in our government and society in prospective and giving us the history of what has led up to today. He gives examples as well as excerpts of his source materials. This is written so it can be understood by everyone. I learned a lot. There is a lot to think about in these pages.

Oliver the Cat Who Saved Christmas: The ... Oliver the Cat Who Saved Christmas: The Tale of a Little Cat with a Big Heart - Sheila Norton

Daddy got me this for my birthday. And since I finally pushed through the end of The Forever Song I can get to this just in time for the holiday it's about.

My health is on the mend, very slowly. I got a semi-diagnosis. My ovaries aren't producing enough estrogen. Which is what causes menopause, for those of you young enough to not have to worry about such things. Mind you, I just turned 32. I shouldn't be having these issues. So now I'm being referred to a specialist for further tests and to figure out a course of treatment. Yay me. My eyes still ache, and I'm sometimes nauseous. But I can function at least. I'm also seeing my primary care manager to get something for the migraine pain.

On a brighter note, I won a 6 month subscription to Book of the Month Club with an Instagram photo I took.

It was my 4th try. Lol. I was determined to win. Not just because I'm competitive but because it will ease our budget a tiny bit each month.

Anyway, I hope you all have a wonderful Whatever You  Celebrate.

The Holidays

For those not in the know, I've had a migraine for a week now. Well it's a lot more than that. My hormones are totally screwed, my skin is bad and I'm like some super weepy She-Hulk. Tuesday I got a serious pain in my lower right side, and it got so bad I ended up in the ER.

They gave me a CAT scan that ruled out my appendix and kidneys. They also said my ovaries looked healthy. But a follow up with the women's health nurse at my doctor's office determined that CAT scans aren't good at looking at ovaries. And she felt a large, firm spot on my right one. Just her poking it make me cry. Now I'm scheduled for and ultrasound tomorrow morning and I've had blood sent out to wherever they send it to see if my hormones are out of whack. Suffice it to say I'm in a huge amount of pain, both in my pelvis and in my head. I'm on several meds now and I'm useless. It's making me a not-so-pleasant person to be around. Light hurts. Movement makes me sick. Pray this is something easy to fix, because I really don't want to spend the holidays in recovery.

The Educational Power of Discomfort

One of my kids' parents shared this article with me just before graduation as a way of thanking me for challenging her daughter and pushing her out of her comfort to the place  where learning begins. I have my students study the Holocaust and other genocides, but we don't stop there; together we wade into the controversial waters of current events, which, in today's climate of coddling and intolerance, can be (and sometimes has been) a controversial move on my part, but the benefits generally outweigh the risks, and I am far too old to start changing now. Besides, parents and kids like the ones I just mentioned make it all worthwhile.
