Triggers: eating disorder(s), sexual abuse, violence/death, harassment, miscarriage and there might be a few more but those are the ones that came to mind the quickest
Thoughts/Feelings: So, I've a huge DK fan. I've been fan since I first picked up her books, and very few books have been hit-and-miss with me. However, this one was kind of miss for me. I don't know if it's because there were a lot of issues the main character was sorting through, and in the process of properly sorting through her issues, that some of the story got lost along the way. I don't know if it just didn't sit well with me because of the what was going on or what. I can't really explain what went "wrong". However, this didn't give me that satisfying feeling I get from finishing a book, especially one by Dorothy Koomson.
I do think some things could have been resolved differently, and maybe even that contributes to that feeling. I don't know.
All in all, I won't say it's a "bad" read but definitely not my favorite by her.
So, basically, the main thing taking up my time right is well, college(or university). I've been so busy. So very busy. I haven't had much time to read but when I do have I'm going between these three books.
The Flavours of Love : I'm finding it really interesting. I love this author. She writes amazing books. And when I was finally able to get this, I started reading it immediately. I'm getting more clues but I'm not figuring too much out right now. I'm pretty far in, but I don't think I'm exactly halfway either. I am looking forward to see where this goes. I've seen a lot of mixed reviews on this one due to some kind of even that happens in the book. So, yeah.
At Grave's End : This is the second book I've read by Jeaniene Frost. The first one I did kind of like. I didn't necessarily like everything about it, but a lot of it was good. I feel like I'm feeling the same way so far about this book. But we'll see.
Kindred : This book(and author) have been on my TBR and rec. read for a long time. So, I'm finally glad I was able to get this. I did have some trepidation. I've tried to read a book by Octavia Butler before, and it way too much for me, and I couldn't take it. So, I'm trying not to put this one down just due that experience. So far, I do like it, and I love POC SF/F. I think there even needs to be more it to be honest, and when I come across a SF/F with POC main characters I get excited. So, I am going to continue reading this, but I'm also trying to keep myself braced for any type of content that shows up.
Best books for book group discussion
The Help - Kathryn Stockett - race, class, personal agency, white-savior complex, who gets to tell whose stories? Plus bad-ass Minnie.
11/22/63 - Stephen King - Time travel and changing a past event to "make things better" in he future. All wrapped up in great Stephen King storytelling.
Goodnight, Beautiful - Dorothy Koomson - A woman becomes the surrogate of her best friend (a guy that she is secretly in love with) and his wife. Only they back out well into the pregnancy. All kinds of feels in this one. Guaranteed to engender discussions full of righteous anger by some, but measured contemplation by others.
