The Cat in the Hat - Dr. Seuss

Another lovable classic from Dr. Seuss. I am truly glad we don't have Cats in Hats roaming about that can create such havoc!

Read Across America Day

http://www.readacrossamerica.org/

For 20 years this event has been promoted on Dr. Seuss' birthday.  Here are more links if you are interested.  Whether you are a reader, teacher, librarian, parent, or other, this is a great event to get involved in.

Get involved! NEA’s Read Across America Day is a nationwide reading celebration that takes place annually on March 2—Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Across the country, thousands of schools, libraries, and community centers participate by bringing together kids, teens, and books, and you can too! Incorporate these guides and activities to celebrate reading with young people.

Word Sounds
Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You? - Dr. Seuss

This book by Dr. Seuss presents students with different sounds of real world objects and animals. This book is an easy read for students. Students will experience rhymes and word sounds, or onomatopoeia. An interesting activity to do with this text is having students guess an object or animal from a particular sound. I will have a paper bag with multiple items it in and I will provide a sound for the item. The students will try to guess the item in the paper bag.

Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss
Green Eggs and Ham - Dr. Seuss

Dr. Seuss's Green Eggs and Ham is another classic children's book. This book is a fun read for young readers--whether they are just beginning to read or are advanced in their reading. The alliteration and rhyming is an added bonus to an already great book. Readers can familiarize themselves with rhyming and alliteration and these literary devices also keep the book fun and interesting.

I would use this book in the classroom during a lesson on literary devices--specifically rhyming. I would ask students to play a rhyming puzzle card game where they must retell the story by matching rhyming word pairs. This would serve as a quick and fun review of the game but also practice rhyming.

The Lorax
The Lorax - Dr. Seuss

He speaks for the trees! I love this vibrant work by Dr. Seuss. I think most of the charm of this book comes from the usage of made-up words. Seuss's made up characters make children giggle and use their imagination! I could use this book for all kinds of activities! I would love to read this on Earth Day. I think it would be great for students to research pollution and its effects on the environment after reading this text. Another great activity for young readers to try is a cause and effect study like the one I found here:
