Surfaces and Essences: Analogy as the Fuel and Fire of Thinking - Douglas R. Hofstadter,Emmanuel Sander

NR: Hofstadter & Sander - Surfaces and Essences. A big fat tome on analogy as a cognitive concept. This is what I need right now for my thesis.

Surfaces and Essences: Analogy as the Fuel and Fire of Thinking
Surfaces and Essences: Analogy as the Fuel and Fire of Thinking - Douglas R. Hofstadter,Emmanuel Sander I didn't listen to the whole book. I listened to about 9 hours of it. The book is clearly for lovers of words of which I'm not. I do like the authors overriding theme that we think by categorization through analogy. I just didn't want to sit through a countless stream of analogies and word play examples.

Some people (especially lovers of words) will love the book. I just prefer less examples and more facts.

(I bought this book because I absolutely loved the senior author's book, "Godel, Escher and Bach", and suspected that this word book would not be for me, but was willing to give it a try. I'm only writing this review to warn people who prefer science and mathematics type books that this book might not be suitable for you).

Surfaces and Essences: Analogy as the Fuel and Fire of Thinking
Surfaces and Essences: Analogy as the Fuel and Fire of Thinking - Douglas R. Hofstadter,Emmanuel Sander Quite an intriguing look at the conscious and subconscious use of analogy in everyday thought, communication, empathy, understanding others and their experiences, and making sense of our own experiences in order to avoid or more fully appreciate them in future.

As well-researched and interesting as the book is, I do feel it overruns, often labouring the point or providing an excessive number of examples. That said, it really does break down some aspects of thought and language quite beautifully and is therefore well worth the commitment.

Recommended for anyone with an interest in philosophy, psychology and/or language.
