Top Five Books That Lived Up To The Hype
NOS4A2 - Joe Hill
Grasshopper Jungle - Andrew Smith
You: A Novel - Caroline Kepnes
The Pilo Family Circus - Will Elliott
Krampus: The Yule Lord - Brom

I like lists. A lot. This list is my personal opinion. If you would like to play along, please do. I'd love to see what books didn't let you down.

In no particular order...

NOS4A2 and Krampus are perfect examples of "There is no way in hell these books are as good as their concepts need them to be." In my opinion, both books blew away my expectations and were even greater than I anticipated.

You was a flashbang in a cave. Completely unexpected and shockingly illuminating. I sure didn't think I would enjoy it as much as everyone was telling me I would. I will continue to play cheerleader for Caroline Kepnes until she writes a bad book. So far, with You and Hidden Bodies, she has yet to let me down.

Grasshopper Jungle had absolutely no right to be as good as it was. It's B-rated science fiction laced with poignant and sharp-witted social commentary. Grasshopper Jungle is as close to a new Vonnegut book as one is likely to receive in today's world.

And, finally, a book written by a disturbed mind is bound to be just as whacked out as it deserves to be. Will Elliott had some issues while writing The Pilo Family Circus, and his mental illness nearly drips from the page. I'm glad it was recommended it to me or else I might never have found it. It's one of those books that gets better every time I think about it.

That's my top five. Do you have one? Let me know in the comments below, or create your own post. Maybe we'll make this a weekly thing.

#Shelfies

Paul Read or Dead demands a sacrifice. Or a shelfie. Can't remember which. Either way, here's a couple pics. Sorry, no nudes.

The King Collection:

My Fandom Shelves:

(That's an old Royal typewriter on the bottom.)

Misc. Shelving:

(These are my first edition non-King books, some of my favorite paperbacks, a bit of my work, and King's Hodges Trilogy because I feel Mr. Mercedes and Finders Keepers are not truly part of the King-verse... oh, and the bottom two shelves [unseen] are full of King paperbacks.)

That's that then. Thanks to Paul Read or Dead for the idea. I'm enjoying having a peek at everyone else's shelfies. Keep them coming, please.

*hugs and high fives*

A Good Clean Fight - Derek Robinson Hornet Squadron, who figured prominently in Robinson's previous novel, "A Piece of Cake", is now stationed in North Africa, where they are tasked with fighting both Rommel's Afrika Korps and the Luftwaffe. There is also a SAS unit (SAS = Secret Air Service, an elite unit in the British Army which carried out long-distance missions against German military installations and air bases well behind enemy lines in the desert) led by a rather eccentric commander (Captain Lampard) determined to make his mark against the Germans and Italians.

This novel is peopled with a wide array of characters --- from both sides of the war --- who bring out both the life and death intensity of combat, as well as the absurdist nature of war itself.

"A Good Clean Fight" is entertaining to read, too, for the author excels in fleshing out characters no reader can long remain indifferent to. Reader, prepare yourself for an enjoyable experience.

Clean Food Daily: Feel Good Soup and Sal... Clean Food Daily: Feel Good Soup and Salad Combos - Debbie Andrews I absolutely loved this cookbook filled with fresh and dynamic looking soup and salad combos. The author really developed some unusual but really tasty looking recipes. Easily any of the recipes could stand on their own as well. I grabbed this for free off amazon for my kindle and, after reviewing it, considered it a steal at $.99!
