Review: The Half-Stitched Amish Quilting Club by Wanda E. Brunstetter
The Half-Stitched Amish Quilting Club - Wanda E. Brunstetter

Title: The Half-Stitched Amish Quilting Club
Author: Wanda E. Brunstetter
Series: The Half-Stitched Amish Quilting Club, 1
Format: hardcover, large print
Length: 460 pages
Rating: 3 stars

Synopsis: Join the club of unlikely quilters who show up for Amish widow Emma Yoder’s quilting classes. A troubled young woman, a struggling couple, a widower, a rough and tough biker, and a preacher’s wife make up the mismatched lot. But as their problems begin to bind them together like the scraps of fabric stitched together in a quilt, they learn to open up and lend a helping hand. Is this what God had in mind to heal hurting hearts and create beauty from fragments?

Favourite character: Jan
Least favourite character: Pam

Mini-review: It took me two tries to read this and I'm kinda glad I did now. There were plot twists, and lessons learned. I really struggled with Pam, but I liked everyone else. I wish we had gotten more POVs from Paul, but about halfway through the book she stopped writing about him and you'd forget about him until the next quilting class and be like "oh yeah, this guy." Also Star's last name changed spellings a couple of times, which is a pet peeve of mine. (Stephens vs Stevens.)

One of the reasons I stopped reading was because she described everyone by race. So instead of a saying a pastor's wife and a school teacher, it was a black pastor's wife and a Hispanic school teacher, which really bothered me.

Fan Cast:

Emma Yoder - Meryl Streep

Star Stephens - Sofia Carson

Jan Sweet - Callan Mulvey

Pam Johnston - January Jones

Stuart Johnston - Charlie Day

Ruby Lee Williams - Viola Davis

Paul Ramirez - Oscar Isaac

Lamar Miller - Jeff Bridges

Mary - Mamie Gummer

Terry Cooley - Cameron Monaghan

Nancy Stephens - Morena Baccari

Rating: 3 stars

Synopsis: Having returned home to Franklin, North Carolina, after helping solve the mystery in Mandie and the Medicine Man, she begins her new adventure with a visit to Charleston. A trip to a friend's ocean-front beach house introduces her to what seems to be a "phantom" rising into the air and then falling into the water. Even though caught up in the excitement of discovering another mystery, Mandie learns some important lessons about friendship and jealousy.

Favourite character: Tommy

Least favourite character: Josephine

Mini-review: Good book. I liked all the ghost stories. I'm not sure how I feel about all these family plot twists. Like the plot twists are good, but the way they're revealed is too questionable and public. I still don't like the way they write the Negro characters. I am aware that they didn't have an education, but still. I don't get writers who write their characters unintelligibly. I have to read those sentences sometimes three or four times to understand the gist of what's being said.

Fan Cast:

Amanda "Mandie" Shaw - Emma Rayne Lyle

Thomas "Tommy" Patton - Asher Angel

Josephine Patton - Reylynn Caster

Elizabeth Shaw - Malin Akerman

John Shaw - Robert Downey Jr.

Uncle Ned Sweetwater - Zahn McClarnon

Lucille Patton - Claire Danes

George Patton - Lee Pace

Joe Woodard - Louis Hynes

Dr. Woodard - Gideon Emery

As Iron Man chases Madame Masque, her actions threaten to rip all of reality apart! Shellhead's incredible armor will be put through its paces in a story that will shock and awe — but it is who exactly Tony teams up with that will have everyone talking.

Favourite character: Tony
Least favourite character: Whitney

Mini-review: I prefer Black Cat. Can we go back to her showing up in every comic book? This was going along great until the last few pages, then it stopped being enjoyable.

I loved the Awesome Facial Hair Bros (I saw that on the internet a lot too). I loved Friday and Mary Jane's cameo.

Review: High Survival by Carolyn Keene
High Survival - Carolyn Keene

Title: High Survival
Author: Carolyn Keene
Series: Nancy Drew & Hardy Boys Super Mystery, 10
Format: mass market paperback
Length: 214 pages
Rating: 3 stars

Synopsis: NANCY DREW and a small group of adventurers hike into the Wyoming wilderness to sharpen their survival skills. But the higher they climb into the remote and rugged Rockies, the more perilous the risks become. Nancy suspects that the mounting dangers are more than mere accidents of nature--and that the adventurers are headed for the most deadly survival test of all.
FRANK AND JOE HARDY, responding to Nancy's call for help, confirm her worst suspicions. The mountain is the focus of a million-dollar criminal enterprise, and a gangland mob has cut the expedition off from the outside world. An accomplice inside the group is leading them on a true trek to terror, and it's up to the three intrepid sleuths to blaze a trail to safety...

Mini-review: I love these books. I love the dynamics between the characters. I love the flirtation between Nancy and Frank. They are a much better suited couple than Nancy and Ned, who can't seem to stop cheating on each other.

Very glad it was George instead of Bess. The mystery was good, a rare one where I didn't solve it before the book ended. I did accidentally spoil myself though, which wasn't fun.

Fan Cast:

Nancy Drew - Katherine McNamara

Frank Hardy - Timothée Chalamet

Joe Hardy - Skyler Gisondo

George Fayne - Brianna Hildebrand

Johnny Alvarez - Jake T. Austin

Coach Pemberton - David Harbour

Melissa Somers - Maude Apatow

Curt Walker - Jordan Calloway

Stasia Kominsky - Madeleine Arthur

Dan Shimoya - Charles Melton

Pete Shimoya - Ryan Potter

Bill - Chris O'Donnell

Quick read from cover to cover
No Exit - William Taylor Adams

Oh Lordy! Where do I start with this one!

Let’s say first of all, I could not put this one down. It was very fast paced and you wanted to keep reading until the end. You were on constant pins and needles throughout the novel and it was a job well done.

You cheered for Darby. She was no nonsense, and kept fighting on even when it felt like there was nowhere to turn to and things started turning really ugly. Yes she obviously did some very stupid mistakes along the way and this may infuriate some readers. However I liked her grit and her determination to keep that child alive.

The twists in this book is enough to put you on the edge of your seat. It keeps you interested and makes you want to keep reading to see what might be coming up next. I have to admit, the ending seemed a bit outrageous and it got to the point where it was a little over the top in dramatics. However, I’ll forgive for this time as I enjoyed reading this book.

The villains were well created, albeit cruel and horrible. Lars and Ashley do make a rather interesting duo and the little twist involving some bystanders at the rest stop was a nice addition to the plot. I did not care too much for the animal cruelty though, but I suppose it’s to be expected with someone of Ashley’s cruelty and manner. The little subplot involving his uncle was also interesting and adds another dimension to the book (albeit a small one).

Definitely take the time to read this! It’s a quick fast paced read and you feel the tension and suspense throughout the book. If you can ignore the over the top craziness towards the finale, you’ll find an enjoyable read from start to finish.
