To be thrown aside with great force.
The Mob and the City: The Hidden History of How the Mafia Captured New York - C. Alexander Hortis,James B. Jacobs

I put this book down after the very first couple of chapters for having one of the least consistent narrative through-lines I've ever seen in a nonfiction book. Why is there a large-font header break every three paragraphs? (Not an exaggeration, I swear. It's totally inexplicable.) Why is it never clear what year we're in, or how the chronology is progressing or reversing, as it often appears to do? Why does every name presented feel like a ghost, rather than a detailed figure with a biography and a personality?

The book presents itself as a counterpoint to decades of mob mythologizing and inaccurate history: since it depends on supposedly understudied primary sources, I was expecting to see some of that material in the text. Maybe the author just wrote the shittiest intro ever, and the rest of the book is stellar? I can't even bring myself to care enough to check the final chapters. I was excited about this book and the subject -- I love contrarian histories, I really do -- but all I'm left with is a deep disappointment. DNF.

New York: A Brief History (Enhanced Version) - Dr. Vook Interesting, but not gripping. Also very general and there is really nothing new in it.

Live from New York: An Uncensored History of Saturday Night Live - Tom Shales,James Andrew Miller Interesting look at the late night television show that has become a pop culture institution. A bit too long and, while I usually always enjoy the oral history format, I felt some of the editing left a bit to be desired. Probably would have enjoyed it more if I was a big of fan of the show as the guys who put together the book.

Live from New York: An Oral History of Saturday Night Live
Live from New York: An Uncensored History of Saturday Night Live - Tom Shales,James Andrew Miller I've read some people didn't like the format - the constant paragraphs from different people involved with the show - but I didn't mind it so much. Really surprised, though, that Christopher Walken hadn't contributed, given how many times he hosted and how many other "five-timers" appear in the books.

Inside the Apple: A Streetwise History of New York City - Michelle Nevius,James Nevius A well written, well researched travel book. Even without much knowledge of American history, the clear explanations woven into stories of the city's growth and buildings' origins worked for me. If anything, I could have done with a tad more on the later years, the 20th century. But it was all good.
