The Boyfriend Makeover by River Jaymes (audio version)
The Boyfriend Makeover - River Jaymes

The Boyfriend Makeover is a sexed up book. If you’re listening on audio you might want to make sure you’re wearing headphones or at least close your car windows otherwise you risk scandalizing yourself to the nosy Parker’s at the stop light. There’s one section that is 30 minutes or so of straight up sexy time. I listened on the drive home from an appointment (with my windows closed and the volume turned waaay down just in case someone thought me a perv), when I got home I put in my headphones, cleaned the kitchen mess everyone had left for me (yes, I know you all want my glamorous life) and played with the dogs ‘til they were huffing and puffing and the couple were still going at it.

But it is about other things too . . .

Noah donates his time to charity events and lives off of a trust fund. He’s a charmer and a smart dresser and gets talked into making over a doctor for the “Bachelor Bid” at his upcoming event. Ky is a workaholic who prefers his cowboy boots, flannel and giant belt buckle to most anything else but he also loves his sisters and agrees to auction himself off after they talk him into it. He thinks the whole thing ridiculous and he’s very uncomfortable but he’s also a very good big brother. Awwww, Ky.

Noah, naturally flamboyant and a shameless flirt can barely contain himself when gorgeous Ky is around. Is he gay? Noah is determined to find out and find out he does . . .

This is a fun book. Noah’s dialogue is ridiculously funny and Ky balances him out. And their chemistry is something else! There’s some angst and some drama as Ky keeps his sexuality to himself for reasons. Reasons that I am not going to spill. Noah drinks too much and his humor masks some deep pain. He has some serious work to do on himself before the two will ever live out a HEA and I like that this book addresses it and doesn’t gloss over it. And then there’s sex. Whew, if you want a steamy read this one’s calling your name!

This is book #3 in a series and I’m sure I would’ve gotten more out of the appearance of the myriad number of friends who pop in and out of the story had I read their stories. It stood alone pretty good though so you’ll get none of my typical mid-series complaints here. Now I want to read the other books just to see what I’m missing.

Narration Notes: I have to say, as much as I loved the story and the characters and all their angst and sexy ways, I wasn’t too crazy about the narrator, Marc Bachmann. He sounded like a newscaster when not doing a character voice and something about his voice just didn’t seem to fit any of the characters. He’s professional and polished but maybe a wee bit too dramatic for this story, eh I don’t know. Instead of falling into the story his voice kept pulling me out.

I received a copy of this book directly from Tantor. Thanks Tantor!

The Boyfriend Makeover
The Boyfriend Makeover - River Jaymes 3.5 stars

All the yo-yoing back and forth between Kyland and Noah was a bit of a turn off. I like the chemistry and the idea that they couldn't keep their hands off each other and I did enjoy reading about them fighting the attraction. Noah and Kyland were likable characters and their story was nice.

Kyland's sisters, well Sierra (I think it was) was a bit annoying to me. I hated her general outlook and forcing it on Kyland. I also didn't like the way Kyland acted around them.

The Backup Boyfriend - River Jaymes

Super angsty. Which I am not a fan of. Mostly because ansgty means lack of communication skills and one of them behaving like a jerk. Which happens in this book.

There are a couple of good aspects, but mostly, negative points.

1. This is NOT a gay-for-you story. Seems like it, but eventually we see it is not. It may seem obvious though. Hello, Dylan's first time bottoming was **snaps of fingers** like that. He asked for it. He asked to do it again. He did not have any inner struggle being with a man (one of the things I love the most in a g4u romance). He never freaked out. He never questioned himself anything. Disappointing.

2. I felt sorry for Dylan -around the end-, but that did not make him a good main character. He was a true jerk as a potential boyfriend. Man, the many times he hurt Alec with his words! Or denying every possible relationship between them. His past is truthfully horrible but since he tells Alec almost at the end of the book, I spend most time just not caring about him and his commitment issues.

3. Alec was nice, and I like the sex swing. But jeez, he truly has the worst luck in love. Falling for guys who are the worst boyfriend material. Yes, Tyler was a good person. Dylan was a good person. But as boyfriends, they suck. I wished the babbling and photographic memory were more detailed. As they were, it did not make Alec more adorable. It was like the author tried to sell us that cute tic, and when you are actually reading the book, it is like "and then?".

4. The sex scenes were so... impersonal. Hello, they have a bj scene, and then the full action scene, and not even ONE KISS?? I much rather prefer a make-out scene than sex. It was so detached. Not even a lot of skin against skin. It was so unromantic. They were just buddies with benefits. Cuz I was not convinced that they were entirely friends. Just buddies.

5. I wish the author narrated the scene where Alec was drunk and gave his dirty talk trying to convince Dylan that bottoming was awesome. Or when they went to watch the football game together for the second time. The author had the worst decisions making these scenes behind the curtains. I think they were going to enforce their chemistry together, but as it was just told, as in memory, they did not help it to convince me.

6. I love plots with "pretending to be boyfriends". But it was so underdeveloped here. Just in the first couple of chapters. I was hoping for more tension, more confusions of feelings. But sadly, no.

7. Noah just jumps into their moments together. And practically forbids them to be together. I know he was a good friend and care for them, but please! Let them be. To witness their first time together was such a turn-off. Couldn't he at least knock the door??

Was it fluffy? No. Was it funny? No. Was it romantic? hm, I don't think so. Was it boring? Not really. Will I read the rest of the series? No, since I have not fallen for the rest of the characters, and since I have 0 interest in their love life. Would I recommend it? Probably not. Unless you like angsty, unromantic, unbelievable mm romances.

Normally not my favourite trope: old lovers meet again.
The Boyfriend Mandate (The Boyfriend Chronicles Book 2) - River Jaymes

But it was well done here.

It had some drama, some pain, a lot of banter and a lot of hotness.

A really good mixture.
