Damaged Saints
Bitter Angels - C.L. Anderson,Sarah Zettel

Bitter Angels opens when a woman suffering from severe PTSD after being tortured as a prisoner of war is called back to active service to investigate the death of her mentor by a sort of interplanetary secret service called the Guardians. The story is set in a future where medical science has achieved human immortality, but access to it is heavily restricted. It is also possible to have an AI chip implanted in your brain that provides you with lifelong companion that only you can see and hear. It is a future where colony world populations exist as indentured slaves working to pay off debts for water and air that can never be paid off.

The plot of Bitter Angels involves a series of extremely byzantine plots and the main characters' attempts to unravel them while be continuously manipulated by the powers trying to keep their secrets. I cannot attempt to describe the plot without spoiling it, but suffice to say it is genuinely interesting and kept me guessing right up to the last chapters.

Review of "Reclamation" by Sarah Zettel
Reclamation - Sarah Zettel

Not going to be a very good review of this amazing book.  Not just because of spoilers but because the spoilers wouldn't make sense without the context of the rest of the book.

A new to me author always planning to read -- I am glad I did.  Presumably her debut novel and oh boy was it top notch science fiction with plenty of what if, aliens, different cultures, what if type of evolutions, moral dilemmas, sentience ... so very, very much even if very few characters where avoided confusing POVs.  So much, I'm surprised a debut author successfully incorporated into an apparently standalone novel.

Gotta read this one if at all into SF.  The edition I read was a reprint ebook from Open Road Media that at the time could be borrowed free from Kindle Unlimited subscription.

Reading progress: 14%.
Reclamation - Sarah Zettel

The world building is getting really good.  Along the lines of just who is the alien with a good sense of several cultures.

So far, the characters are somewhat mysterious with backgrounds steadily being filled in.  M.C., Eric, has been so busy escaping captors while rescuing a new captive that I cannot yet tell if I like him.  An intriguing back story so far.

Sort of new to me author.  I have read some bits and pieces and samples from her.  Always planned to read.

Just starting ...
Reclamation - Sarah Zettel

This is publisher Open Road Media's re-release of her first novel (I've never read).

It's a kindle unlimited borrow for me.  So far, Open Road is only "traditional" publisher I've found participating selectively in KU.

Can't say I care for their cover choice.

Bad Luck Girl
Bad Luck Girl - Sarah Zettel

This is the third in the American Fairies trilogy, following Callie LeRoux in her quest to find and free her parents and escape from the fairy relatives who wish her harm. I like Callie and her story, although I did feel that this third book was a little unfocused at times.

On the other hand, I really liked the way Callie’s arc in this one is all about coming into her own, learning the limits and contours of her power. She stands at the crossroads of several identities: black and white, fairy and human, and she must figure out who and what she wants to be. She also is struggling to understand the politics of the fairy courts. Despite all these shifting pieces, she is clearly herself, and also clearly wants to help others, particularly the half-fairies who the courts despise and see as a food source. I loved this, and the sense that she cares about those on the outside because she has been there herself.
