Bud, Not Buddy
Bud, Not Buddy - Christopher Paul Curtis

Bud, Not Buddy is about a young boy who is sent to an orphanage at the age of six after his mother passes away. This story is taken place during the Great Depression. Bud is determined to find his biological father while he is moving from the orphanage to different families. I read this story a couple of years ago and thought it was fantastic.

This novel could be read in a 3-5th grade classroom aloud, or it could be read in 6-8th grade. I would use this story to have comprehension, analysis and theme discussions as reading it aloud in the class. I would have 5th grade students choose one object or person from the story that is a symbolic representation and have them write about it. For 3rd or 4th graders, I would have them choose one of the main characters and create a word web describing that character.

Alice in Wonderland's hidden messages

Is Lewis Carroll’s tale really about sex, drugs, and colonialism? Some say yes. Others argue it’s about eating disorders or the Wars of the Roses.

The Call To Live A Symbolic Life
The Call To Live A Symbolic Life - Carol... The Call To Live A Symbolic Life - Caroline Myss Caroline's books are like candy to the soul. They have great information that can be immediately applied and thoughts that rest with you to be revisited later. The timing of me reading this book was perfect and her message compelling.

Allegory: The Theory of a Symbolic Mode
Allegory: The Theory of a Symbolic Mode - Angus Fletcher Who would think? Not a snappy title about what sounds like a pretty dull topic, yet this book, which I read back in the 1980s was a goldmine. Allegory is more than a literary device, but the way we perceive things, as Paul de Man argues, far more densely, in Blindness and Insight.

I remember this book as being exciting, which either means I'm a nerd, or it was one hell of a good book on theory.

The Symbolic Species: The Co-evolution of Language and the Brain - Terrence W. Deacon I couldn't understand this book at all, but was dutifully attempting to plough through it when a visiting friend noticed it on my shelf. "That's just the worst book ever written!" he said. "My mother-in-law knows him. He's an idiot." Possibly there was an adjective before "idiot".

At any rate, I decided I didn't need to read any more, though I'm afraid it's still on my shelf. I can't quite say why. Lack of decisiveness, I suppose.
