The Rotters' Club - Jonathan Coe

It may be a bit ambitious, but I'm hoping to finish all these books this week for Bout of Books, plus a slim guide to the workings of the economy by Yanis Varofakis that's not in the catalogue. Even if I don't finish them all a few done would be great. I was just ironing and listening to the BBC adaption of The Importance of Being Ernest (Oscar Wilde). I'm nearly finished it and it's proving fantastic, with performances from Judi Dench and Colin Firth. I'll have that finished by tonight.

But when Putting Victims First means rebalancing adversarialism in the complainant's favour, and tilting the scales away from the defence, I worry. The test I thihnk, in all such cases, is to put yourself in the shoes of the falsely accused. What restrictions on your ability to mount your defence are you content to accept to permit your accuser an easier ride? But as with so much when it comes to these debates, the underlying assumption is that it will never be me

This continues to stagger me. The amount of incompetence in our justice system (U.K) is unbelievable.

It's absolutely shocking what goes on in magistrates courts. I had no idea that magistrates are voluntary lay-people who often have a slim grasp of the law.
