Set in the turbulent days of the founding of Hong Kong in the 1840s, Tai-Pan is the exciting story of a man and an island. For Dirk Struan was determined to transform the barren island called Hong Kong into the brightest jewel of the British Empire. And the opium run was the surest and most dangerous way for him to achieve riches beyond imagination.

Not as good as Shogun but still well written and worthwhile. Also set in Japan with rich history, characters and plotting.
Like Shogun, a very enjoyable fictional account of Europeans in the Far East at a decisive time in history. I think I prefered Shogun overall, but I did very much enjoy this one too.
Great, great book. Love Clavell's writing. Will read again in the future. So very good!
