Clavell potrafi zachęcić by czytelnik sam, niezależnie od lektury zaczął zagłębiać się w historyczny epizod Wojen Opiumowych i powstania HongKongu. Świetnie jest również ukazany kontrast kulturowy, pełen socjologicznych idiomów, trudności dogłębnego przeniknięcia mentalności Azjatów.

I enjoyed this more than Shogun, mainly because the tension was ratcheted up by the quarrel between the Struans and the Brocks.

Like Shogun, a very enjoyable fictional account of Europeans in the Far East at a decisive time in history. I think I prefered Shogun overall, but I did very much enjoy this one too.
