It's nice to see someone write a children's book in much the same style as those from the 19th and early 20th century that my mother used to read to me. It isn't the way language is used that makes Despereaux so similar (although that doesn't hurt) so much as the fact that the story can get very dar...

This book did not impress me. I thought that it would be good, considering that it won the Newberry award. But I did not find it to be a good work of children's literature. Read this book. It is lovely and wonderful and if you don’t read it you will regret it. The tale of an unlikely hero with large ears, a rat who loves light, the Princess Pea, and Miggery Sow. (Jan 2008)

Love the conversational nature of the narrator. Appreciated how he (that's how it sounded in my mind) made a point to explain things (like "big" words) to the reader. Very short chapters.

Decidedly odd style with frequent asides to the reader. Clunky but sweet story of an unlikely mouse hero.

I read this when I was just an iddy biddy kid. The story was original and kept me interested but there was just nothing that wowed me so this is a solid 3 stars for me.

I don't know why mice get to be the underdogs so often in children's lit. I guess because the only things smaller tend not to have fur, or recognizable features, or spines, and we consider the tiny mammal cute.Anyway, Desperaux is the charming mouse hero of this fairy tale. He charmed. Miggery Sow, ...
