Sometimes, you lose everything because of a single mistake. And sometimes, no matter how hard you try and how many sacrifices you make, it's gone for good, never truly to return.

In terms of sheer style, this is one of the best books I've ever read. I'm not a fan by and large of Victorian fiction, but Hardy, while having all the hallmarks, does it all so skillfully it's akin to an edifice like Chartes Cathedral--the epitome of its kind. The omniscient point of view is master...

I really, really do not like this book at all and, to be honest, I found the ending concerning her sister a little bit twisted and wrong. How that is supposed to make the misery of the rest of the book okay, I don't know. Yes, it gives you a lot to think about. And yes, it does have a good storyline...

I hated this book. Absolutely hated it. But I'm giving it four stars because Thomas Hardy is inexplicably one of the best English writers of his time, and the way the novel had been constructed was amazing. I hated the characters mostly, which was why this novel was so brilliant. #doesntmakeanysense...

Tess of the d'Urbervilles is not a feel-good book, which sharply sets it apart from the other 19th century novels about young women (think Pride and Prejudice and Jane Eyre, for instance). No, it's sad and depressing to the point where it almost makes me angry. Because poor Tess, prone to making c...

There are mild spoilers in this review and major spoilers in the comments which follow. For the past 18 months I’ve been reacquainting myself with Thomas Hardy’s novels through the medium of audiobooks, starting with Alan Rickman’s excellent narration of [b:The Return of the Native|32650|The Return ...

Before i get into my review, I just have to say I've enjoyed myself immensely reading this. I gladly participated in a buddy-read to increase my exposure to Literature of the kind and had no expectations. Tess as a character will always stay with me, I have admiration for her struggle though not for...

Kind of sad, but shows the picture of the society of that time. Enjoyed reading it.

I have always hated Hardyesqe-style coincidences - letters under door mats for instance. Also I have always felt that if any of his characters made the common sense decision they wouldn't get into the scrapes they do.

If I'd only known how much I would enjoy this book, I wouldn't have let it sit on my shelf for 5 long years! I adore classics but it is hard for me to read a lot of them without feeling some indignation of the injustices dealt to women. Hardy presents us with Tess, a young woman who really doesn't h...
