When The Alienist was first published in 1994, it was a major phenomenon, spending six months on the New York Times bestseller list, receiving critical acclaim, and selling millions of copies. This modern classic continues to be a touchstone of historical suspense fiction for readers everywhere.

The year is 1896. The city is New York. Newspaper reporter John Schuyler Moore is summoned by his friend Dr. Laszlo Kreizler—a psychologist, or “alienist”—to view the horribly mutilated body of an adolescent boy abandoned on the unfinished Williamsburg Bridge. From there the two embark on a revolutionary effort in criminology: creating a psychological profile of the perpetrator based on the details of his crimes. Their dangerous quest takes them into the tortured past and twisted mind of a murderer who will kill again before their hunt is over.

Fast-paced and riveting, infused with historical detail, The Alienist conjures up Gilded Age New York, with its tenements and mansions, corrupt cops and flamboyant gangsters, shining opera houses and seamy gin mills. It is an age in which questioning society’s belief that all killers are born, not made, could have unexpected and fatal consequences.

3.0 The Alienist (Carr)
I borrowed this first-in-a-series from my e-library on an impulse, because it was heavily recommended on a book forum I follow. I enjoyed it, with reservations. A little to my surprise, it was published in 1994, but I suppose it's receiving a second burst of popularity because it was made into a 201...

2.0 The Alienist ★★☆☆☆ (DNF)
This seemed really promising. An interesting premise and good reviews from people I trust. So maybe it's the audio format, but throughout the first 2 hours of audio I kept having to rewind and re-listen because my mind kept wandering to other things. I just got tired of waiting for the pace to pick ...

3.0 Review: The Alienist
Detective stories are not, have never been, and never will be “my thing;” however, I don't want to grow stagnant as a reader, guilty of not trying to branch out from time to time. The Alienist came with high marks from many friends, so I thought it might be worth venturing into this uncomfortable te...

3.5 The Alienist
I enjoyed listening to the audiobook of The Alienist, a story about a serial killer in New York of the year 1896. Essentially this novel combines historical facts, forensics, psychology and good old plain detective work and for the most part it is a compelling read. I´m pretty sure that I would ha...

4.5 The Alienist
This was a nostalgia read. I first read this book 20 or so years ago when it came out and it still stands out as one of the best books I've ever read. Set in 1890s NYC, an alienist (or a psychologist in modern terms) and his friends set out to solve the murders of several "boy-whores" - children...
