This book is the sequel to The Alienist which I rated four stars. What I loved in that book was the sense of time and place--New York City during the "Gilded Age" of the 1890s. I loved the way Carr took us through a tour of my city through familiar streets and landmarks and loved the mix of mystery/...
Dragged a bit but quite readable.
I remember being a tad less impressed with this second book in his "series," but The Angel of Darkness is still an excellent period mystery/thriller, well-plotted, beautifully written, and a well-drawn villain. Highly recommended!
June 19th 1919There's likely some polished way of starting a story like this, a clever bit of gaming that'd sucker people in surer than the best banco feeler in town.
