That was pretty dark for a children's book. I enjoyed reading it and I loved how fast paced it was. I can't believe I never read it when I was younger...oh well I'm never too old for a childrens book :D

Quick, entertaining book with smart kids and clueless adults. I wish I'd read this when I was a child.

I enjoyed this book. As an adult I found the explanation of words a bit irritating but I think it was necessary for a younger audience and in that sense I thought it was well done. I did wonder sometimes about the choice of words being explained though. For example, explaining the world "faker" b...

When I read this book as a kid because let's face it I would not read this book as an adult because I don't want to waste my time on it. I did not like this book at all. Not as good as I remember it being. I don't plan on reading the rest of the books in the series either.

This was a re-read, but it was a nice re-read. :)Lemony Snicket is just pure brilliance, the story is just wonderful (also sad), but also funny.I love the Baudelaires, and I will again be cheering and hoping for them, eventhough I know what will happen. Thanks Lemony Snicket for this book. :)

I read this aloud to my 8 year old son. He asked me to read the next one in the series, and I probably will, but I am curious if he'll pick up the rest of them himself someday. He did not seem enchanted. Like me, maybe he senses that there are better books in the series, or that each book builds on ...

This is the first volume of what turns out to be one of the most ambitious, intelligent, hilarious children's book series ever written. Read it and keep going to get to the good stuff.
