1915. The great detective Sherlock Holmes is retired and quietly engaged in the study of honey bees when a young woman literally stumbles into him on the Sussex Downs. Fifteen years old, gawky, egotistical, and recently orphaned, the young Mary Russell displays an intellect to impress even Sherlock Holmes -- and match him wit for wit.Under his reluctant tutelage, this very modern twentieth-century woman proves a deft protegee and a fitting partner for the Victorian detective. In their first case together, they must track down a kidnapped American senator's daughter and confront a truly cunning adversary -- a bomber who has set trip-wires for the sleuths and who will stop at nothing to end their partnership.

4.0 The Beekeeper's Apprentice
Astonishing tone-perfect addition to the Sherlock mythos placing Holmes a little younger than canon, and with a teenage female protégé. Hard to believe the author's a Californian - she does an incredible job with the language, as well as historic and location-based details. Clever mysteries, enjoyab...

3.5 Finally done!

1.0 The Beekeeper's Apprentice
I’m wavering between 1 and 2 stars because I finished it and it was well written. I really wanted to like this. I read the reviews and while there were some clear issues a female Holmes sounded great. It was not. Mary "Sue" Russell is NOT. She has no flaws, no addictions, no mental issues, no shortc...

1.0 The Beekeeper's Apprentice
Ok, I got to page 60 and am calling it quits. The Watson bashing is already in full swing. There is a scene that was basically copied out of Pride and Prejudice. This is all wrong and too disturbing. I'm sorry, I am just not compatible with pastiche when it concerns my favourite characters.

Holmes realizes right away that Mary has a knack for deduction and he takes it upon himself to take her on as an apprentice. This is the first book in the Mary Russell & Sherloc...
