Though I loved the movie LA Confidential, written by this author, I couldn't get into this novel. Not when there are so many great romance novels (my preferred genre) to read!If you love crime novels set in the 1940's/1950's Los Angeles, this will be more up your alley.

1.5 stars, up from 1 star after reading the afterword that this edition has in it. this is written really harshly. too much into the lingo of cops and assholes for me most of the time. it's based on a true event, but the investigation and resolution is fictitious...but there's truth to the charac...

This creeped me out and kind of not in a good way. Its an absorbing and convincing story of obsession and corruption and murder. I see why its spawned imitators and inspired movies. But these are not really enjoyable people to spend time with, and I kind of felt like I needed a shower to wash off...

I don't give many books a full five stars, which should tell you all you need to know about my feelings on THE BLACK DAHLIA. Based on one of Hollywood's most brutal and baffling murder cases, Ellroy's novel is painstakingly researched, beautifully written, and believable. The atmosphere of a turbule...

When I listen to Dexter Gordon, I feel that if you close your eyes you can almost smell the cigarette smoke, hear the commotion in the nightclub, and faintly taste the whiskey and feel the glass in your hand. The Black Dahlia is like that. But more sinister. You can still hear Dexter's sax, but loo...

I had to put it down, I couldn't get past some racist comments made by the main character on the first few pages. Hopefully I will be able to come back to it as it is a book club read.

A very good book for an American noir murder mystery. I wasn't so fond of some of the graphic descriptions in the book but the love story I found fascinating.

Originally I gave this book four stars. I changed it to five. This was a great book especially if you like this genre of writing. It kept me charged throughout the entire book, hated to put it down, couldn't wait to pick it up. Loved the writer, loved the book. Need to pick up L. A. Confidentia...

Upon finishing this book, my overall feeling was, "Well, now at least I can say I've read James Ellroy." I kept wondering, while I was reading it, what makes people consider him such a good writer. He's certainly cinematic. I've not seen L.A. Confidential or The Black Dahlia, but I could easily s...

good read, though it took me ages to finish it (3-4 weeks), because of the language first, I don't know the 1940's slang too much, and then I didn't have too much time, what with the preparation of our play and my holiday in italy, where I did not have much time to read.It is pretty gruesome though,...
