I generally enjoy McKinley's work, but I have to give this one only 3 stars because of the shockingly thinly-veiled orientalism present in the novel. Questions of colonialism are part of the plot of the novel, as you have the colonizers in tense peace with the colonized in a let's-just-leave-each-ot...

This is one of my favorite books of all time!!! My copy is dog-eared and worn out. I read it every 3-4 months. I love the heroine Harry Crewe and her adventures in making friends and surviving in a land that was not hers.

In some ways, I believe The Blue Sword makes a better read than its companion novel, The Hero and the Crown. You get the sense that McKinley’s drawing from more sources in her creation of this world than in the fantasy dragon world described in the later published prequel. The story of The Blue Swor...

Plus it had a ton of action. One of the things that make Robin McKinley's books so good is the way that she describes the worlds that she creates and draws you completely into the book. Along with...

I loved this book. With all my heart. It starts with a girl who doesn't quite fit, then builds from there. There are demons and heroes and enchanted swords and true love. Also legends and big loving cats and semi-supernatural archers. Did I mention evil? Oh, and kings and proto-British cavalry? And ...

This is probably the most boring book I have ever read in my life. I don't know why I read the entire thing, but I managed to drag myself through it. The whole story is painfully dull. I do not recommend it.

This was my first introduction to Ms. McKinley. This was a magical book for me. The journey for Harry was pretty amazing for a young me. This book helped me want to do better and struggle harder to achieve what I want to do.
