In the first half of the book, I'd just wanted to throw this book far away and tell Ruth to get a grip of herself. But then, the story of her mother emerged and understanding dawn on how they became who they are. And at the end, I was pleased with the lessons learnt and the 'better' person emerging...

I like Amy Tan, and this is a good book. It's not her best, though, and if you've read much of her work you might find it repetitive.
