A cool, chronological, humanly unperceptive record which is also impressive, and important, as a military document- this diary by Brereton from early 1941 as commander of the Far East Air Forces under MacArthur, until V-E Day as head of the First Allied Airborne Army.
After his desperate attempts to develop Philippine air defense, the futile delaying battle after Pearl Harbor, MacArthur sent Brereton out to prepare rear bases in the Dutch East Indies under Wavell. He retreated to the C.B.I. [China-Burma-India] theatre to command the 10th Air Force for Stilwell, and with the British rout in Africa, was transferred to the command of the Middle East 9th Air Force.
Subsequently, Brereton went on to Britain to help destroy the Luftwaffe, and later led an airborne army into Europe.
