there's more to life than reading books
Contains some minor spoilers: 4.5 starsThis book definitely exceeded my expectations. It was a little slow at times but I enjoyed Lanagan’s way with words so much that the patience required to get into the story was well worth it. The story is intriguing and captivating yet tragic and heartbreaking....

I think I can best explain my feelings towards this book in terms of what it wasn't quite. For example:The writing was lovely, but not quite beautiful. Masterfully written, a bleak, almost anthropological multi-generational tale of a town that sometimes has selkies and sometimes doesn't--but I wish it had been more of a novel.

Hated this book. Forced myself to read 50 pages, then gave up. Too bad, since I love mermaids and stories about selkies. I just couldn't get into it.

The mermaid magic and rules are wonderfully unique, although I would have appreciated a little bit of man-eating. The predicament of...

The seal-brides of Rollrock are chillingly childlike in their lack of agency, passive and plaintive and wishing for the sea. The writing is beautiful, chronicl...

This is my first Lanagan but by no means will it be my last. From the very words chosen to the way they’d been woven together, the feel of this is long and lush, dense and at times too much. Everything is so specifically and skillfully put together, that I felt the moody, dark and yes, sometimes eve...

Source: eARC from NetGalleyI'm a fan of books told through interconnected stories from different points of view. In this book, the technique works brilliantly. From the story of Misskaela the sea witch to that of women whose husbands and fathers take selkie lovers, to the son of a selkie, each indiv...
