Sequel to The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms. I liked this one better, partly because there was less violence, or at least less violence of a sort that bothers me. Also, I really liked Oree and her voice. [Aug. 2011]
In this, the second of her planned Inheritance trilogy, Jemisin once again delivers another captivating and wonderfully different fantasy story. The introduction takes place at the time of the Gray Lady's birth at the end of The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, and then abruptly the narrative skips forwar...
You know, I'm glad I forgot a lot of the plot points from the last book, because that made them entirely new to me in this one. Ha. Seriously, though, this was just as compelling as the first book, and I'm eagerly looking forward to the third. I love this world and its pantheon.
Although this is the second part in a trilogy this novel feels complete, not like a middle piece, and pleasantly different from the first part. A different heroine, a different outlook on the society of the Kingdoms, different gods, but still the same epic feel... Jemisin did an awesome job!
I liked this, but not quite as much as book one. That's partly because it retreads a lot of the same emotional and thematic territory, and for a series to keep my interest on the same level for each book, it usually has to continually do something new. Still, I sympathized with the protagonist, felt...
I really wanted to like this book more than I did. It wasn't bad. I'll probably read the third book in the series.
