I really enjoyed this story and it's great to be immersed in the world of Tolkien's First Age of Men, Elves and Dwarves. Christopher Tolkien has stitched together from his father's partially completed writings a very worthy addition to the legends of Middle-earth.The voice of The Children of Húrin l...

This book is amazing. I'm a huge Tolkien fan, admittedly, but I don't see why people all say only Tolkien fans should love it. Turin Turambar is one of my favorite characters, Beleg is one of my favorite characters, Hurin is one of my favorite characters...etc. The book's writing is cold, yes, and l...

This is a very dark and cold story, as so many reviewers have pointed out; but it's a tragedy, of course it wasn't going to be sunshine and rainbows. Turambar was one of my favorite characters in the Simlarillion, so naturally I was thrilled when I found out that he had his own book--and now he is o...

Good, but reinforces the basic pessimism of Tolkien's story-world. The only salvation in the First Age is via a literal deus ex machina -- which sort of spoils it for the irreligious.

I confess that, having read the tale of Turin in both the Unfinished Tales and the Silmarillion, I didn't really care to read a more in-depth version. However, finding a copy on the Bargain Shelf proved to much to resist. So what do we have here? A v. twisted Romeo and Juliet, that's what (well, ...

Don't ask me to name any of the many gods, demons, peoples, and monsters that populated Tolkien's history book of his own fantasy world making. It's confusing and a second read will be necessary, but what I enjoyed were the tales. Following the heroic legends is like listening to a fireside tale tol...

The Children of Hurin by J.R.R. Tolkien (edited by Christopher Tolkien) is the tragic story of the scions of Hurin, Turin and his sister Nienor. Step into the wayback machine; this tale takes place long before The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings, when the First Dark Lord, Morgoth, sought dominion ov...

Bleaker than the Lord of the Rings, The Children of Hurin tells the tragic tale of Hurin's children from when they were cursed due to their father's disobeying of the first dark lord, Morgoth, to their eventual demise.Obviously this book is a masterful work of art, since it was written by Tolkien. H...

I have mixed feelings about The Children of Hurin. I enjoyed it, and I do think this edited version makes the tale easier to read. My objection comes from marketing the tale as "new"; it isn't really. If you like all the old sagas, especially ones like the Ring cycle, you'll love this. If you ha...

Really a lovely book, with not-at-all-cheesy, atmospheric b/w and color illustrations by Alan Lee. Worth mentioning, 'cause it's so rare to see a book with actual illustration these days it seems! This, of course, is a story "put together" by J.R.R.'s son Christopher from Tolkien's copious unfinished...
