On November 9 and 10, 1938 Kristallnacht, or, as some know it The Night of Broken Glass took place. No Jew in Germany, Austria, Germany's annexed territories, or in all of Europe would ever forget Kristallnacht. In fact, for those who were interested this night was a foreboding for the rest of the world.

After Kristallnacht in November 1938, many Jews within Germany decided that it was finally time to leave. Though many German Jews had already emigrated in the preceding years, the majority of German and Austrian Jews still remained, and would find they'd have a far more difficult time because emigration policies had toughened. By 1939, countries not only required visas to be able to enter, but substantial money was also needed to leave Germany. Also most countries, especially the United States, had immigration quotas, so visas were near impossible to acquire within the short time spans in which they were needed. For many, the visas were acquired after it was too late.

The opportunity that the S.S. St. Louis presented seemed like ... was indeed, a last hope to escape.

This is their true, incredible, unforgettable story...
