I know I'm late to this particular party - but this book deserves the hype, the plaudits, the praise. It is a marvelously captured look at the American family at an incredibly particular turning point in our country's history. Don't believe me? Read "Freedom" then read this (as I did) - and just ...

If all you knew of The Corrections was its Goodreads reviews, you'd think that the Lambert family was singlehandedly responsible for ending the world as we know it. I suspect that's why this, Franzen's greatest work, has a paltry 3.7 star average. To be fair, the Lambert family is dysfunctional and f...

I can't finish this book. I got about 60 pages in and I can't make myself read anymore. The characters are unappealing, the story is probably there somewhere but there's so much exposition that doesn't seem relevant that I can't really find it. As for the writing... why do people think Franzen is so...

The Corrections is the story of the Lambert family - wife, Enid, husband Alfred, and their three adult children, Gary, Denise and Chip. The family is going through a crisis as Alfred's mental and physical health swiftly declines due to Parkinson's disease. In a last ditch effort to hold her dysfun...

I'm not sure why people are so upset about the "talking turd" scene. Pretty standard stuff. His quotidian approach to loquacious fecal matter aside, this is a marvelous novel. I don't normally like reading family dramas, which seem to be the kind of book we regard as "serious literature" here in ...

Oh. My. God. This must be a brilliant book because I am bored to death. I can see the merit; it's written well and is clearly smarter than I am, but I think that's my problem. I just get the feeling that even these screw ups are better than I am. And I don't like it.Almost done. We'll see...

Unlikeable characters, unlikeable author, and Mother of God, could he have piled on one more metaphor or reference to shit!?

Many people recommended this book to me. People I respected who had similar tastes in books. It also won the hearts of many prickly and egotistic critics. So it may be that this book just suffered from over-sell for me, from inflated expectations. I don't know. But I do know that apart from a few pa...

So accurate it was scary. His portrayal of 30-somethings and their relationship with their parents, along with their attendant guilt complexes, was uncanny. Also hilarious.
