Faber creates an incredibly developed, detailed and grimly portrayal of life in late 1800's England from the perspective of a prostitute. The writing is flawless and story telling classic. Even though this is a long read, it moves well and holds a reader's attention. The character's are flawed and...
A book like this, even at this length, is often described as a "romp." The pace is fast, amid drinking, sex, insanity, debauchery, corrupt servants, etc. It's definitely entertaining and well written, and I'd be happy to forgive the plot twists and character actions that strain belief if it weren't ...
What an enjoyable read this was. If you need some summer "just for fun," reading, I definitely recommend this one. Faber's atmospheric re-creation of the seamier side of Victorian London is delicious.
Wow...I don't quite know how to sum up my feelings about this book. Perhaps I'd be better off waiting for a few days and give myself more time to reflect on it. For now, I'll trudge on with this review and see what I manage to come up with. This book sucked me in so completely that I read all 800+...

The setting is the dark side of Victorian London of whores and industrialists. All of the characters are mad to some degree and s...
This book was absolutely fantastic right up until the final couple pages. Even with the amazingly disappointing ending, I still recommend the book and will likely read it again myself at some point. It's about 900 pages long, but I wanted it to continue for another 900. I was utterly absorbed in it.
A whopping 900 pages, this book took a good deal of time to read, but I did enjoy it. It has drawn me to learning more about Victorian England, though with all that I've read in this volume, I might need to take a break before I do. I think some aspects were disappointing, and the end just leaves yo...
A look at the underbelly of England's Victorian London, this one won rave reviews from readers. I don't know, I just did not like it -- the plot meandered on and on, I didn't care for the characters, and the whole experience made me never want to pick up the book again. That's too bad. For the compl...
