Como lo afirma Borges en sus Ensayos Dantescos, es el sentido de ascenso y redención lo que le da el carácter de comedia a este poema. La descripción de los suplicios infernales y el encuentro celestial con la amada Beatriz constituyen, quizás, la cumbre más alta de la literatura universal.
