This book is slippery. It's so many things, and it's exceedingly difficult to rate. I won't be surprised if my rating, and opinion, increases with time. It took me a while to get into this book. It's so highly stylized it reads a bit like poetry mixed with steam of consciousness. (Which sounds fai...

I almost stopped reading this book near the beginning--the combination of the bleak situation and fragmented language made me think I couldn't finish it. Over time, the book grew into something more beautiful, and I'm glad I made it to the end.

The writing was beautiful, but the humanity was so dark. Ultimately, I could only get thru 1/3 of this book.

There were parts of this dystopian novel that I enjoyed, parts I struggled with, and a few that didn't belong. The main character is good, or discovers goodness within himself. His stream-of-consciousness narrative is jarring at times. Comparable in theme and direction to The Death of Grass, which I...

First of all, this is another post-apocalyptic vision of the world. But, in the Dog Stars, the writing itself sets this book apart: the language is robust and experimental, with short machine gun like bursts and haiku-like prose. It is also dream-like and often beautiful. It is about loss and surv...
