I am a bad Master of Arts in English, because I have not read or appreciated nearly enough classics for someone with my degree. I bought this for a quarter as a library sale a couple years ago and promptly forgot about it. I also rescued a kitten a couple months ago and she's charmingly my feline eq...

So far, this is the less convincing book by Greene I picked up this year (which means at all). The main character is an author so famous that one of his novels has been made into a movie (in the 1940s) and yet he has a landlady?! Oh come on! There are no aspidistras flying here. And although some pag...

A yawn of a yarn. It's only 192 pages, but I had a hard time finishing. I humbly acknowledge my doom as a Literary Lunkhead for not going gushingly gaga over Graham Greene's gifts. I don't think I'll be normal again for days after finishing this. One of the finest pieces of writing I've ever read. Written with simplicity but with an overwhelming power that just tore my heart right out. I am a Graham Greene convert.

It hurts to love no matter what it is you love. This book is full of pain, scorching, thick, dripping, messy, solid and alive. One of my favorite books. It deals with love and faith in God. Greene was an atheist that turned to Catholicism.

This is my third Greene and has I think, cemented my admiration for this author forever. It is his writing that I love first. It feels as if Greene rolls every word around in his mouth before carefully placing them down on the paper before him. He writes with all the delicate craft of a sculptor, ch...

"I wrote at the start this was a record of hate." Hate, love, God, relationships, are all very much a part of this intensely personal and intriguing book. (The movie with Ralph Fiennes is terrific.) Several sources have suggested that the book is partially autobiographical and that Sarah is loose...

For school, but I loved it. Seriously loved it. It made me cry and all in all I just thought it was beautiful. [Nov. 2008]

Fantastic love story, but so depressing I can't give it more than a 3.
