1890, England.
Mr Manverham, owner of Rockbridge Hall, a large Nottinghamshire estate, is chairman of one of London’s most influential banks.
Despite having a mansion in London’s Belgravia, it is easier for him to guard his assets in Rockbridge, and so the Hall has been practically turned into a vault.
But Rockbridge is a small, close-knit community, and everyone knows everyone else’s business.
And so there is no way of keeping it secret when Manverham installs his third safe in his mansion – to hold top-secret private papers.
He needs to be able to trust his servants to help guard Rockbridge, but they have secrets of their own.
As Manverham desperately tries to keep his papers safe, shady pasts threaten to come to light, and the safety of the family itself is at stake.
At the heart of it all is Miss Maitheson, a young governess whose diary threatens to expose everything.
What is Miss Maitheson hiding?
Can the family really trust her?
Or are they right to feel fear at Rockbridge Hall?
Tim Heath is an actor, director and writer. He has had two other books published, a childrens’s book The Dragons at Marshmouldings and the Sherlock Holmes play The Adventure at Sir Arthur Sullivan’s. For six months he was part of a resident acting company at Thoresby Hall in Notts. This experience was partly the inspiration and setting for The Fear at Rockbridge Hall , which was mostly written in his spare time there in one of the seldom used, reputedly haunted drawing-rooms.
