Bert, a private investigator, finds himself in the middle of a mystery after a car that is used as a flower planter goes missing from the middle of town. In the midst of the mystery, Bert’s nemesis, James Moriah, returns to town and his girlfriend, Alice, goes missing. Can Bert and his sidekick cat Apache find Alice and solve the mystery before it’s too late?Type: Short StoryEst. Reading Time: 25 mins.Book Extract“Sorry Captain, just low on sleep,” the officer said, stifling a yawn.“Come here girl,” Bert said picking up the arching cat. She did not like being yelled at, especially when she was on a case. Bert took the paper out of Apache’s mouth. He took a look at it. The slip looked very familiar. He came across the same paper a year ago when he solved the rubber ducky case. It was an old playbill for the Little Red Barn Playhouse. James Moriah used to be the head of the troupe that played there before he went off the deep end and kidnapped all of the rubber duckies in town.“Captain, take a look at this,” Bert said handing it to Captain Zercher. “Do you think he could be back in town?”“I guess, but I thought he was on a plane on his way to Michigan,” the Captain said, scratching his head.“This has his style written all over it,” Bert said. “I mean, really, who else would want to steal a Traube?”“Well, I’ll send a squad car out to the barn,” Captain Zercher said, “but I doubt we’ll find anything there. He’s too smart to go back there again.”“Yeah,” Bert replied, “you’re probably right. I think though, he’ll be coming after me because I am the one that has caused him all this trouble.”Not only had Bert arrested Moriah for the Rubber Ducky Invasion, but he had also been the cause of much of Mr. Moriah’s problems before then as well. In high school, Moriah was Bert’s drama teacher. Bert’s terrible acting had caused Moriah to lose his standing in the acting community. Bert could never remember exactly what it was that he had done to anger the drama teacher so much.“Alice,” Bert said, suddenly remembering his girlfriend sleeping alone at home.
