The author only had a part of a story in her. She just can't get out of the confines of reality and write a full blown time travel story. You can tell she wanted to with this story but won't take the story where it should be going. Or maybe, she just wrote this story to fulfill a contract obligat...
The characters were less than one-dimensional; the "plot" missing. If you're interested in time, read The Time Traveller's Wife instead.
