I found this inside one of those bargain bins at Big Lots. As it only cost me a couple bucks, it sat on the shelf next to a bunch of other books I picked up that weekend. I had more pressing reads to attend to. When I finally got around to reading it, I was unhappy with myself for putting it off so ...

Accidents ambush the unsuspecting, often violently, just like love.It was Good Friday and the stars were just starting to dissolve into the dawn. As I drove, I stroked the scar on my chest, by habit. My eyes were heavy and my vision unfocused, not surprising given that I'd spent the night hunched ov...

I keep trying to figure out why this book is not calling to me.... It seems like my type of story -- recommended to me various times as something unique & different, weaving historical fiction through the stories w/in stories. But still, I just can't completely get into this one (even though I've re...

Harlequin-esque in story (evidence: cover), but well-written overall. The physical descriptions of pain and other sensations are well done (pun not intended), but they weren't enough to hold my interest. The book is about a man who is wasted and drunk and drives his vehicle off a cliff and both he and the car burst into flames. He is burned beyond repair though the hospital does all it can t...

I think a large part of the reason I gave this only 3 stars was that while it certainly had some very interesting elements and a unique idea in general, I didn't feel particularly connected to it or to the characters. I listened to the audio, which I think did a good deal for the book as I'm not su...

If I hadn't been lent this book I probably never would have read it otherwise. It's written in that bland literary style that's easy to read, but lacking in the substance that I typically prefer. I would say that I ultimately found it enjoyable to read, but I wouldn't need to read it again.

“As Nietzsche wrote: ‘The criminologists tell us that the typical criminal is ugly: monstrum in fronte, monstrum in animo ( a monster in face, and a monster in soul).”But Nietzsche was wrong. I was born beautiful and lived beautifully for thirty-plus years, and during all that time I never once allo...
