My last couple of reads weren't very satisfying, so I decided to read The Ghost Brigades, the second book in the Old Man's War Series by John Scalzi. You may have heard Scalzi's name recently - he won the Hugo award for his novel Redshirts (if you haven't read it yet, go now and get a copy - it is f...
Once I'd loved [b:Old Man's War|16078572|Old Man's War (Old Man's War, #1)|John Scalzi|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1349873151s/16078572.jpg|50700], it wasn't going to be long until [b:The Ghost Brigades|8934762|The Ghost Brigades|John Scalzi|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/book...
This was a more thoughtful read than Old Man's War with the story/plot being the central theme instead of the main character. It took me a little longer to be drawn into the story but it got much better the longer I read. The main character in this story is Jane Sagan from Old Man's War (John Perry ...

Very enjoyable sequel, would likely stand on its own very well. A very interesting expansion of the universe; looking forward to reading more. Also a quick read - started on one plane flight and finished before boarding for the return flight.
Dirac is, perhaps, a slightly less engaging narrator than John Perry - but the continuing increase in universal depth is impressive. This is a damn good follow-up to an already damn good book. It continues the intellectual questions about humanity and ethics... while also providing some really fan...
Oh, look, I know it's all complete silliness and in-jokery and the MC's a colossal Gary Stu, but dammit it was fun for me. I like fun. There should be more fun. So there.

Before reading this book, a bunch of people had told me that it wasn't very good, didn't live up to its predecessor, Old Man's War. But while I do agree it's not quite as good as Old Man's War, I liked The Ghost Brigades a great deal more than I was expecting. It's about an entirely new cast of chara...
Another fantastic read from John Scalzi. Initially, I was concerned that I wasn't going to like this book as much when I realized that the story followed another character other than John Perry, our protagonist and narrator from Old Man's War. I wasn't sure I was going to appreciate Jared Dirac or t...
