Viola Hatherley was a writer of ghost stories in the 1890s whose work lies forgotten until her great-grandson, as a young boy in Mawson, Australia, learns how to open the secret drawer in his mother's room. There he finds a manuscript, and from the moment his mother catches him in the act, Gerard Freeman's life is irrevocably changed. What is the invisible, ever-present threat from which his mother strives so obsessively to protect him? And why should stories written a century ago entwine themselves ever more closely around events in his own life? Gerard's quest to unveil the mystery that shrouds his family, and his life, will lead him from Mawson to London, to a long-abandoned house and the terror of a ghost story come alive.

This is a great gothic ghost story, which is suitably atmospheric and creepy, albeit with a slightly disappointing ending.
Very good, though I preferred THE SEANCE by John Harwood.
Gerard, the protagonist, has a secretive pen pal, a mother who will not discuss her past and a great-grandmother who wrote ghost stories....one of which apparently came true.It was a little slow getting into this one but it ended with a bang. This was Harwood's first novel. The second one The Seance ...
The story is layered among ghost stories which all seem similar and the ending was disappointing. Would give it 1 1/2 stars, but I liked Harwood's writing and relaxed pace; it's the plot that I didn't enjoy.
A very boring read..It kept my interest enough to have me finish it, but I don't think I have read another book by this author. His writing style is very, very dry.
