A tantalizing tale of suspense and family secrets that weaves Victorian ghost stories into the present – where they start to come trueTimid, solitary librarian Gerard Freeman lives for just two things: his elusive pen pal Alice and a story he found hidden in his mother’s drawer years ago. Written by his great-grandmother Viola, it hints at his mother's role in a sinister crime. And as he discovers more of Viola’s chilling tales, he realizes that they might hold the key to finding Alice and unveiling his family's mystery – or will they bring him the untimely death they seem to foretell?Harwood’s astonishing, assured debut shows us just how dangerous family skeletons – and stories -- can be.

This is a great gothic ghost story, which is suitably atmospheric and creepy, albeit with a slightly disappointing ending.
Very good, though I preferred THE SEANCE by John Harwood.
Gerard, the protagonist, has a secretive pen pal, a mother who will not discuss her past and a great-grandmother who wrote ghost stories....one of which apparently came true.It was a little slow getting into this one but it ended with a bang. This was Harwood's first novel. The second one The Seance ...
The story is layered among ghost stories which all seem similar and the ending was disappointing. Would give it 1 1/2 stars, but I liked Harwood's writing and relaxed pace; it's the plot that I didn't enjoy.
A very boring read..It kept my interest enough to have me finish it, but I don't think I have read another book by this author. His writing style is very, very dry.
