Ketchum is a master storyteller. His subjects touch the very darkest parts of human nature. His prose and flow move quickly and the growing sense of dread and suspense are palpable. What starts off as a remembrance of childhood activities (sights, smells, feelings) quickly careens out of control and...

Harrowing. A horror novel to compare with Lord of the Flies, albeit a bit worse in this case as an adult enables the kids' depradation. Does a superb job of portraying someone sliding into normalized evil actions.

This book was sickening! I'm not sure how to rate it. If your looking for shock value I would say it's 5 stars, I found it 1 star entertaining, so to be fair I'm going to give it a 3 and no I won't be watching the movie!

I pretty much read this book in one sitting, something I usually don't do. But, it managed to hold my attention. It starts out a little uncomfortable to read and then graduates to more and more disturbing levels in fairly short order. You think, okay here's a line that Ketchum won't cross and then he...

One of the most disturbing pieces of literature I have ever read. This book is an assault on the senses.

This was the first book I ever read by Jack Ketchum, and it still sticks with me to this day. Brutal, heartbreakingly sad, and definitely not for the weak. Fictionalized version of the Sylvia Likens story. The movie is even more difficult to stomach. If you want a movie version of the real life crim...

Rating this book is so hard since it's almost impossible to separate the writing from the story. It does make it worse once you notice it was based on true events. If you thought "The Lord of the Flies" or "Children of the corn" were creepy - this book will give you nightmares. It's basically like a...
