This is a rather beautiful book about the discovery of self as well as the immigrant experience. Instead of star-crossed lovers via West Side story, the main characters are a golem and a jinni (hence the title). The use of the two magical and culturally based creatures is rather interesting, in pa...
I haven't been this engrossed in a book since Game of Thrones. Each page turn was a pleasure and a dread, knowing that I was that much closer to this wonderful book ending. It is beautifully written and an incredible debut by the author. I will be watching for anything else written by her!
Often books that move too slowly are dull and boring to read, lackluster stories stretched out hundreds of pages longer than necessary. In the hands of the right author, however, a slow ponderous plot can become utterly magical. Helene Wecker is one such author. I will make a small disclaimer: I ve...

At the core is the theme of the scorpion and the frog, in which the nature of the being is paramount to the being's behavior. The reader on the audio is absolutely marvelous. When he...

Abandoned at page 65. This book is written as if it were literary fiction--slow-paced and character-driven--but it just isn't that good. The writing is definitely nothing special and the characterization is clunky. Interesting premise but nothing about it made me want to read more.
A really nice working of two legendary creatures combined with great historical research about the Little Syria neighborhood of New York in the early 20th century.A seemless mix of magic realism and historical fiction. Wecker certainly understands the folklore and how to commingle it in a historica...
4 ½ starsOne made of clay, the other of fire; legends out of mythology. Both awaken in the turn of the 20th century and end up living just neighborhoods apart in New York City. The Golem Chava amongst the Jewish community, The Jinni Ahmad in Little Syria. Each is found by a guardian who helps the...
This one is not a typical love story and not a tipical historical fiction and contains just enough fantasy to be perfect. It wasn't what I expected at all. This book is a rare treasure that really menaged to surprised me.
