I actually wish there are been more about the art and less about the author finding out things (and seemly reaching conclusions and not telling the read how he got there).Parts of the book are really good, in particular the first half. de Waal's great Uncle Iggie sounds like a man anyone would want...

WHY: Written in a tender, poignant voice...an exquisite history of an Old World family, of the society in which they lived, and of their beloved objects. It's a tale of art and wealth, of survival and the bittersweet memories of family heirlooms lost and found.

The collection, obtained by the family in the late 1800's, have an interesting past, including traveling from Japan, to Paris and to Vienna. The b...

I loved the slow buil...
