Leo Gursky is old. He is so old that he has written a note that he pins to himself that tells people his name and where he should be buried if they find him dead. Every day, he sends messages to his upstairs neighbor by tapping on the radiator so that they know they are both alive. But when Leo G...

Finished, but only because it was for class. Lame, unsympathetic characters.

It is a so very sad story. I really can't read this kind of novel anymore. That being said Nicole Krauss is a wonderful writer overall. The book really was excellent.

I feel I didn't treat this book right and should have liked it more; tried to read it while I was busier than a bee and hooked on "Brothers and Sisters", so I practically read it in many short sittings, except for the last part. Well anyway, I can't get over this: too much serendipity. Real life is ...

The History of Love tells the story of two people, Leo Gursky, a survivor of the Holocaust and fourteen year old Alma, named for a character in the book he wrote for the girl he loved; a book he thought long since lost to time. A story wrapped in a story, wrapped in a story, stuffed in a story, wrapped with bacon. Ok, no bacon. It's a very intrigueing book and I enjoyed it, but it's not a good book for reading in stops and starts while burdened with work stress.

I think people that would understand the Jewish characters and Jewish references throughout the book would appreciate it much more than I did.The characters were heartbreakingly real...the way the...

Overall, I liked this novel. I would not put it on my favorites list, nor would I strongly recommend it to anyone, but it was a nice set of interwoven stories and worth a read if you haven't anything else waiting on your nightstand. I think the publisher's description "hauntingly beautiful" is stre...

I tried, I really tried. But I just can't get into this book at all. There is nothing about it that interests me and I don't feel like it has a point - and if it does - I don't have the patience to keep reading until they get to it. I know many people really loved this book, and I'm sorry that I ...
A Scottish-Canadian Blethering On About Books
Recommended by my mother (of all people!) I found this an engaging read, and the author did manage to get me interested in the principal characters, despite the IMO slightly over-clever playing back and forth between timelines. There were a couple of genuine surprises, and plenty of places where you...
