This was a much bigger hit with me than it was with my kids. They were desperate to know why everything was so dark. Me, I loved the illustrations, and I enjoyed the story. The 4 stars are for me; the kids could take it or leave it.
This seems like it would be perfect for lulling small children to sleep.
Illustrations remind me of Goodnight, Moon, simple story with a lot of repetition. Quick read.
The House in the Night is an interesting book--I'm not really sure how to rate it. My niece and nephew did enjoy the pictures in this one, and a breathless "Wow," even escaped from my niece when we got to the last page in the book. This 2009 Caldecott Medal winner really is a classic in the making and my real regret is that this wasn't around when my daughter was a baby! This book is a sophisticated alternative to Goodnight Moon - good news for all you haters out there ;-) I've never encountered anything like the illustration...
