The House of Mirth was a did-not-finish for me, which is an utter shame because I ordinarily love Edith Wharton. I made it halfway through, but never connected with the main character, Lily Bart. I was at a loss for much of the book and grew bored, which we know is never a good sign. Weariness ofte...

If you happen to be getting started on Wharton, I recommend Ethan Frome, Age of Innocence, Summer, and Madame de Treymes before this.

This is the story of a woman who desperately wants to find her place in New York City's high society. She is beautiful but has little money. She has many opportunities to marry, but she manages to sabotage every chance. She is her own worst enemy. She has just enough scruples to prevent a vicious...
