The story of a white orphan girl sold to a southern plantation owner and raised by the slaves he owns. She grows up to love them as a family and as she becomes an adult, opportunities arise for her because of the colour of her skin. She has to make some difficult choices and she does the best she ca...

I waffled between 3 and 4 stars but went with 4 because I've struggled to read anything of substance lately. I think if I had read this last year it would have been 4 stars no question.

The plot has elements of slavery we have seen before, so I understand how some think this book is somewhat stereotypical. But the characters and their complex interactions on the plantation is what pulled me in. I did not want to put the book down, I had to find out what would happen next. It has tr...

So far it is breaking my heart...And I finished it. Such a great read. Very brutal at times, but it seemed so genuine and honest. The characters were so real as they dealt with their hardships. Definitely recommend this one.

The prologue of this book was pretty damn awesome. So much so that I was ready to give this book 5 stars right off the bat. But as the story progressed Grissom threw the kitchen house, the master’s house, the slave quarters and then some into this story. It became melodramatic. The problem was tha...

One of the MOST painful and amazing stories I've ever read.I listened to this on audio and the readers were perfect! At the end of the book, there was an authors note about how the story came to her. And every time she tried to change it, her writing stopped. Pretty cool.My only complaint is I selfis...

Why does it have to do so complicated? As I was reading this novel, I felt so overwhelmed by the complications the characters had to go to through that had I lived in this period of time, I wonder what type of a person I would have become. Lavinia is a white child who arrives on the planation in th...

If it was possible to give this book 6 stars I would. Right from the beginning these characters pulled me into their lives. The story telling that went on between Belle and Lavinia made me feel like I was living their tragedies with them. I remember learning about slavery in school but reading th...
