After reading mixed reviews, I wasn't sure what to expect and almost quit listening to the audio book. I'm glad I didn't.I rounded up from 3.5 because Sarah Waters is a great story teller. I felt it was a bit longer than it needed to be but, contrary to many others, I enjoyed the end. Quite a bit.

A slow build, but well put together. Interesting portrayal of postwar Britain, with class as a kind of haunting.

A story of ghosts or madness? I struggled to like the main character and also struggled to understand the ending. I get that the author was probably trying to keep the mystery alive and sometimes...

I had trouble putting this one down. I was drawn in right from the beginning to the plight of the Ayres family and the mystery of what the hell was going on in their house.Initially I found the doctor's narration a little bit, well, bland. He didn't have a very strong personality like the other char...

This review by Hilary Mantle from the Guardian is exquisite and I am really short of review time at the moment. Will add my own thoughts as soon as I get a minute. "It is 1947; the nation is exhausted by victory, and neither the National Health Service nor the National Trust has yet come along to pic...

An eerie, engrossing haunted house tale. The plot pulls you in and holds you firmly in it's grip. A deep, disturbing, gothic ghost story of the highest order. Subtle and poignant. I could not put it down!

Protip: Do NOT interrupt your reading of this book with others.I have that terrible habit of starting up 3 or 4 books at a time, a book at work, a book at my parents, a book at home, a book for the bus, etc. I've been getting better at this, but I was a third of the way through 'The Little Stranger'...
