I had rated The Magicians 4 stars. The book has its problems, but it is valuable and worth a read. One reason I gave it a 4 rather than a 3 was because it motivated me to read this book. The Magician King suffers from the same problems of The Magicians: meandering plot, dissatisfaction and self-loath...
Strongly reminiscent of C.S. Lewis' Narnia, but grown up, darker, and without the strong Bible parallels. Made the mistake of grabbing the second book first, but it stands on its own as an independent novel in a developed world.
Here I am, torn again. One star for Quentin and four and a half for Julia, maybe. It's maddening.I was completely enthralled with Julia's story. I'd wondered what she'd been doing for all those years before she became queen and now I know. So much happened to her! And her story picked up where we kn...
Though I wasn't totally in love with the first book in this series, The Magicians, I did like this book a bit better. Enough for four stars at least. In the Magician Kings we meet up with Quentin and friends again, this time as kings and queens of Fillory. Fillory is a magical place outside of E...
The Continuing Adventures of a Smug Magical Asshole, as written by An Asshole. and now featuring The New Adventures of a Completely Self-Absorbed Bitch.i suppose i understand the acclaim that has been heaped on Grossman. he is playing with tropes as his characters play with magic. he has a puckish s...
Quentin Goldwater and his friends Eliot, Janet and Julia are living in the magical land of Fillory where they are kings and queens. Their lives are filled with luxury and comfort, but for Quentin that isn’t enough after a while. And when a footman is killed it gives Quentin the opportunity to go on ...
Most of the book was semi-boring, but okay enough that I wanted to finish it, so I figured it would be a 2-star review... then along came the sucky ending and we're down to just one. A shame too, because I had really liked "The Magicians".If "The Magicians" was inspired by Harry Potter and C.S. Lewi...
Really two and a half stars, I suppose. This is one of those "it's (maybe) not you, it's me" books. I'm sure it's all terribly clever, and there were plenty of bits of ideas in there that I liked individually, but the whole didn't hang together for me, and above all, I just didn't care. Picking up t...
What did this sequel exist - it's a novel of fantasy tainted with ordinariness and couched in banal dialogues and nothing much else going for it - echoes of C S Lewis can't save it from the bargain bin. Unimaginative and a waste of reading time.
